National Preparedness Month

Every September we are reminded of the importance of being prepared for emergencies. This year’s theme is “Disaters Don't Wait.  Make Your Plan Today.”  In our area the major risks are snow/ice storms, flooding and high winds (with the occasional hurricane thrown in). You should asses your risks and needs, make plans to deal with them and prepare now…not when an emergency is imminent. Your family should have a communication plan, evacuation plan, emergency go bags and stored supplies to include a minimum of food, water and medications for 3 days for each family member-don’t forget the pets! If you have someone in your family with special needs be sure to consider their special circumstances in your planning. Having the children help in preparation such as packing their own emergency go bag may help them feel they have some control of the situation. There are many resources available to assist you in your planning so you do not have to go it alone.  Emergency preparedness is an ongoing process: don’t delay, instead start now to be ready for the unexpected.
