September is National Preparedness Month!

9.12.2022

September is National Preparedness Month.

The 2022 theme is: A Lasting Legacy: “The life you’ve built is worth protecting. Prepare for disasters to create a lasting legacy for you and your family.” Preparedness is an ongoing process and this month we are reminded of the importance of being prepared. First assess your risks (ice storms, power outages, floods, etc.). Then make a plan (include communication in a disaster, where you would go if you had to evacuate your home, who is a contact person outside of your area if you had to leave home, what medications and information would you need to take with you, what supplies will you need). Assemble supplies (food , water, hygiene supplies, activities, battery operated radio, etc.).

There are many resources available to help in making your plan (Ready.gov, American Red Cross, FEMA) where you can down load forms to be completed or which you can use to make your own emergency plan.

Consider each person in your family including pets. Anyone with special health care needs? Consider also the age of your children. In gathering supplies, you should have enough food and water (1 gallon/person) for each family member (and pets) for at least 3 days. The rationale for this is that in some cases it may take 3 days for first responders to get to you in an emergency. Consider emergency supplies for home but also prepare an emergency go bag for car or work for each family members. Children can help in this by discussing what toys or activities they may want in a go bag. Be aware of the emergency plans for your work or for your child’s daycare or school. How will you be notified in the event school or daycare is closing early? Finally practice your plan.
