Flu Vaccine Appointments Available

We now have appointments available for flu vaccine administration.

As you know, the flu can be uncomfortable – but also deadly. Influenza illness is no fun for anyone, but it can be especially dangerous for certain groups, such as infants and young children, people with asthma, diabetes or heart problems and certain other chronic health problems. The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that all children and adolescents be immunized against the flu.

Although the FluMist (nasal flu spray) has been recommended in past years, it has been off the market the previous two flu seasons because scientific studies showed that it was much less effective then the injectable version (the "shot").   This upcoming flu season (2018-19) FluMist has been re-approved by the FDA but is still not recommended for routine use because of its unknown effectiveness.  The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends it only for those patients who are truly averse to having an injection.  Wildwood Pediatrics feels that due to its uncertain effectiveness patients should only get the injectable form, and thus we will not be carrying the FluMist vaccine.

We have plenty of appointments available in our Flu Clinics in our Essex office so please call to make an appointment, or ask for a flu vaccine when you are being seen in the office.  Unfortunately, we will not be able to give the vaccine during our Ped-I-Care hours.

If the hours for our Flu Clinics are inconvenient please go the Connecticut River Area Health District (CRAHD) website.  They are offering the flu vaccine (and FluMist) in many of the area schools in October and November, and at their office in Old Saybrook from mid October through January on Thursdays from 7am-7pm, for all patients four years of age and older.  Of note, you do not need to live in the town in which the school is located to get the flu vaccine, and their office is open for all that wish to get the vaccine.  Please click here to visit the CRAHD website for more information.
